Hypnotherapy for Children & Hypnotherapy for Teenagers
Navigating childhood years, whether that is 0 – 12 or into the teenage years, can be challenging for young people and parents alike. As a teacher for over 25 years, I have had the pleasure of working with young people from the age of five, upwards into young adulthood, teaching them how to learn an instrument and tap into their musical creativity. Working one-to-one and in small groups I have cultivated relationships with my pupils which have spanned the decades, nurturing learning not just in music, but in how to be a happy and fulfilled little human.
In my latter years of teaching, I have seen the levels of anxiety and school refusal rise to unprecedented levels and have witnessed the struggles of some of my young students who have experienced social, environmental and health anxiety; low self-esteem; lack of confidence; panic attacks; bullying; and exam stress, as cultural and societal demands put pressure on achievement, performance and information retention, over balanced development and how (not what) to learn. Teaching one-to-one with a child is a position of privilege and my young students often confide in me as a non-parental adult. More and more I have found that I am having to utilise my skills as a therapist and coach to support them, not just as students of music, but in a pastoral role as students of life. As a result of this, I became determined to do more. Alongside my Cognitive Hypnotherapy training and NLP language skills, which I use in my everyday interactions with young and old alike, I was keen to learn more about how to work therapeutically with children, to support their emotional and mental well-being. |

How do therapy sessions work and what can I expect?
In sessions we use stories, metaphors, pictures, toys, games and solution-focused activities to engage our imagination, re-train and grow our brain to resolve any problems. We encourage a ‘growth-mindset’ that fosters a love of challenge and experimentation, rather than fear of not getting it right.
Every session is tailored to the needs of the individual child and is pitched age appropriately. Teenagers can expect to be listened to and heard as the developing adults that they are. As a therapist I work intuitively and creatively, responding to the needs and imagination of my young clients. I utilise my skills as a teacher to build trust and create open communication.
After an initial consultation, there is a commitment to six sessions, which includes audio tracks to listen to between sessions, check-in times and resources for parents. Working within this set time frame means that we can establish new habits and behaviours, making sure that the positive changes are permanent, not just temporary. The first three sessions are usually weekly and then time between sessions can be spaced according to needs.
It is important that parent, child and therapist work together as a team, that communications are clear, and that sufficient time is given to resolve the problem. Therapy is not about a ‘quick fix’; it is about making sure that the utmost care is given and that the young person’s needs are met. The wonderful thing about working with this age group, is that we have the power to make a huge and positive difference to how that young person’s life will play out.

How do children experience hypnosis?
When using hypnosis, children often respond extremely well and generally find it easy to accept hypnotic suggestions when skilfully delivered. Children under the age of seven, are already in a brain-wave state that is equivalent to hypnosis. Therefore, unlike adults, they will often experience trance with their eyes open and even whilst engaged in an activity. Older children appreciate a more formal trance, and we might liken this to doing meditation or yoga or their ‘watching TV’ trance, where they are aware of their surroundings but internally absorbed, so much so that they don’t hear parents calling for their attention!
